This is the incredible story of Diego García de Paredes, known as the “Spanish Samson.” Standing 2 meters tall and weighing 120 kg of pure muscle, Diego was not just a soldier; he was a living legend of the Tercios and the trusted man of the Great Captain. From the streets of Rome, where he faced twenty men alone, to the legendary defense of the Garigliano bridge against the French army, his strength defied all logic. He was brave to the point of recklessness and possessed unwavering loyalty. The French themselves confirmed in their own texts that this “Spanish giant” was a force of nature, almost impossible to stop. He left behind a written account of his own exploits. That work is titled “Brief Summary of the Life and Deeds of Diego García de Paredes.” Written on his “deathbed.” Confined to bed, he decided to put his memories in order so that his son would know the truth about his service to the Crown. An ironic ending: It is fascinating that a man who survived thousands of battles, duels, and sieges did not die by the sword. The “Samson of Extremadura” died in Bologna at the age of 64 after falling from his horse.
