HISTORY: Mariana Pineda was born in Granada and was a constitutionalist heroine and martyr of the Spanish liberal cause. She became an enduring symbol of the struggle for freedom against the absolutist regime of King Ferdinand VII after being executed at the age of 26 for refusing to betray her companions. Her home served as a safe refuge for those persecuted by absolutism. She worked clandestinely as a liaison and messenger between Granada’s liberals and those living in exile. She gained great notoriety by orchestrating the prison escape of the liberal general Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor, smuggling monk disguises into the jail. The police searched her home and found a half-finished flag embroidered with the revolutionary motto “Law, Liberty, Equality.” Although there are historical suspicions that the flag was deliberately planted there to incriminate her, it served as irrefutable legal evidence of treason. Unwavering resolve: judicial authorities repeatedly offered her a pardon and the chance to save her life if she revealed the identities of the leaders of the city’s liberal conspiracy. Mariana firmly refused, declaring that not a single word would ever leave her lips. She was convicted of “rebellion against the order and the monarch” and publicly executed by garrote in Granada. Her remains now rest in Granada Cathedral. Her tragic death instantly elevated her into a myth of freedom throughout Europe.
