DEUTERONOMY 1:1-8 Deuteronomy 1:1a; These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness... At the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, the Israelites are encamped in the plains of Moab, where they had arrived in Numbers 22:1. 1. MOSES SPOKE TO THE ISRAEL – 1:1-5 Deuteronomy was a book for ordinary believers, just as Leviticus was the manual for priests and Levites. It is unlikely that the entire nation could hear Moses together, but representatives from all the tribes would be present. So there is an eleven-day journey from Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea. But they had been traveling for forty years and eleven months on a journey that took eleven days; about 150 miles (203 kilometers) from Mount Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea. We recognize that part of the desert experience was legitimate. To come from the Red Sea to the Promised Land, it was necessary to pass through the desert on an eleven-day journey, but much of the desert experience was one of rebellion. I think the story is a typical one, and there are spiritual analogies to be drawn with the children of Israel leaving Egypt and passing through the desert to the Promised Land. These analogies relate to the Christian walk, life, and experience. Egypt, the area of ​​slavery and hardship, is a type of life in the world, enslaved to our flesh, to Satan; and so it is a type of our old life. The Promised Land to which God was bringing them is a type of the glorious life and victory in the Spirit, the life God wants you to live, a life of victory. Now, being freed from the old life, we have this new relationship that we experience with God, learning to walk by faith, putting aside the things of the flesh and beginning this new walk in the Spirit. There is a time in our Christian experience of growth and development, and there is a kind of desert experience that is legitimate, but God certainly doesn't want you to spend your whole life in the desert. God wants to bring you to walk in the Spirit, to have a life in the Spirit, and a life dominated by the Spirit. Now, life in the Spirit begins with the death of the old nature, the old self, which is a position we must take by faith. “Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with him,” (Romans 6:6). Paul the apostle said, “I have been crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20). 2. MOSES REMINDS THE PEOPLE OF GOD'S PROMISE – 1:6-8 Moses explains the law that God had given his people at Horeb (Sinai) forty years earlier. God's first commandment is: You have been here long enough, you have circled these mountains long enough. Now return to the promised land. The key to entering the promised land is the second commandment: GO IN and POSSESS the land that the Lord swore to your ancestors. Victory was assured, but they would not see it unless they obeyed the command to go in and take possession of it. Dear friend: Have you already left your Egypt? (Have you renounced your sins?) Have you already come to Christ? Have you already died to your sins? Have you already reached spiritual maturity? You have been on your mountain long enough. Now return from your state and come to mature in your faith. Enter and take the promises that God has given you – believe in them. Victory will be assured.
