SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Kahindo Mireille Pierrette, Ebola survivor: "Ebola exists—I believe it does. My child had it, and so did I, but then they (the Ebola response medical team) took care of us, and that’s how we tested negative (recovered from the disease)." 5. Mid of doctors at Ebola treatment center 6. Various of Ebola survivors holding recovery certificates 7. SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Gladisse Munguromo, Ebola survivor: "I used to be one of those who thought the disease (Ebola) didn’t exist, but I eventually came to believe in it. What I say to those who don’t believe it is to keep believing that the disease is real—it’s truly out there. We who have suffered from this disease will not accept that they (those who do not believe in the existence of Ebola) are encouraged in their belief that the disease isn’t here—it really is here." 8. SOUNDBITE (French) Dr. Modet Camara, doctor at Alima Ebola Treatment Center in Rwampara: "When we admitted him (the child), given the symptoms he was exhibiting—including unexplained nosebleeds—we performed a PCR test. On the second day, the PCR test came back positive for Ebola. Once the result came back positive, we convened a medical committee, suspended the anti-tuberculosis treatment (which he had been taking before arriving at the Ebola treatment center), and began antibiotic therapy." 12. SOUNDBITE (French) Dr. Patrick Basara Mugisa, chief medical officer for the Rwampara health area: "It is possible to recover from Ebola, and people need to remember that arriving on time will make it easier for the medical team to treat the patient so that they can receive care and recover. Arriving too late may mean we are sometimes unable to save patients, but the possibility of recovery is still there because we have saved others who arrived even slightly late." 16. Ebola survivors leaving Ebola treatment center in Rwampara STORYLINE: Seven people said to have recovered from Ebola were released from a treatment centre in DR Congo on Tuesday, according to local health officials from the humanitarian organization Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA). Among the survivors is a 16-month-old baby who had contracted the virus, along with his mother. Dr. Modet Camara, a practicing doctor at ALIMA's Rwampara treatment center said that they performed a PCR test on the baby, given the symptoms he was exhibiting—including unexplained nosebleeds. “On the second day, the PCR test came back positive for Ebola. Once the result came back positive, we convened a medical committee, suspended the anti-tuberculosis treatment (which he had been taking),” he added. But this is not the first time. The WHO has previously reported cases of people recovering from the Bundibugyo virus, the current species of Ebola, which has no approved treatment or vaccine. The first documented recovery of a confirmed Bundibugyo patient during the current outbreak was at the end of May in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province.
