Imlil, Morocco – is hiring a guide just a scam?

I was eager to explore the areas around Marrakesh and opted for a six-night side trip to Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal, the second-highest mountain in Africa. There are plenty of beautiful walks around Imlil, visiting local villages, more ambitious trails, and also the joys of soaking in the cool mountain air. Apparently, you’re expected to hire a guide as soon as you step outside your accommodation, and I was quoted over 300 dirhams a day for local tours. I decided to challenge this “rule,” save some money, and rely on good old Google Maps instead. It turned out to be a fantastic adventure!
