Crossing the Tasman Sea in a Cheoy Lee 52 Motorsailor
We set sail from Opua, New Zealand, bound for Sydney aboard Kinship, our newly purchased Cheoy Lee 52 motorsailor. The Tasman Sea has a reputation for being unpredictable, and while much of the passage gave us beautiful sailing, calm seas and unforgettable sunsets, the forecast eventually forced us to change plans and take shelter at Lord Howe Island. Along the way we experienced everything from quiet mid-ocean sailing to dramatic weather, a close look at Balls Pyramid, an anchor chain caught around rock, a spinnaker that did not survive the final leg and a rare whale encounter. This was Kinship’s first major offshore passage in decades, and a real test of the boat after an extensive refit. Thanks for watching and coming along for the crossing. #sailing #island #ocean #offshoresailing #sailingadventures
