Add colorblocking lines in Inkscape - Sweater makeover!
Learn to colorblock sweaters or shirts sewing patterns. Add princess seams, kangaroo pockets and other style lines you like, all in free Inkscape. Create pattern pieces with seam allowance included, project the result directly or play fabric tetris ( • Layout sewing pattern pieces in Inkscape: ... ) first. I use Inkscape, a free vector editor for Linux, Windows and Mac. Want to say thanks? Here's how: https://marta-gvozdinskaya.irt.me/ 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝, 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞: / discord 𝐌𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞: / martagvozdinskaya (early access+bonus content) 𝐁𝐮𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/MartaInk... 0:00 Turn plain shirt into colorblocked shirt with a pocket 0:12 Draw colorblocking lines 1:31 Draw kangaroo pocket 2:28 True the line 2:48 Cut the shapes out 4:35 Complete the shape 5:51 Add seam allowance I start with a free kids raglan, Lasten raglanpaita by Jujuna, without seam allowances. Only half of the front piece is needed. First we draw the princess seam. Switch on Snapping and additionally 'Snap to Path' is useful here. With Path tool (B) click at the starting point of the seam on the armscye and on the hem, press Enter ti finish the path. Switch to Node tool (N) and pull the line at the upper third to curve it. For the pocket I decided on unconventional curved top. I pull the guide from the top ruler to the topmost part of the pocket, then pull another for the end of the curve. If you do a straight line, you only need one. With Path tool again place two nodes on the center front and guide intersection and on the intersection of the princess seam and the lower guide. With Node tool curve that line. Select two places on the seam a bit lower for the ends of pocket opening. Place nodes there and curve that line. I don't show it in the video but you could measure with the Measurement tool (M) along the seam to see if the opening if big enough for the hand. We have all the lines now and need to cut the pattern piece along those lines. Select the princess seam, hold Shift and select the bodice. Path/Division will cut the bottom path with the top path. If successful you should see two bounding boxes again but one for the center front and another for the side. Division only cuts well if the cutting line intersects with the bodice path well. 'Snap to path' setting ensures it will but if you haven't used this you'd need to Ctrl Z and fix the princess line. With Node tool zoom in well and pull the end points so they reach the center of the bodice outline, then Division again. After that you can color shapes separately and pull them apart. I duplicate (Ctrl D) each one and pull away. Those two only need seam allowances but the pocket needs to be completed, for now it's just negative space between the lines. We are going to put three more nodes with Path tool. Keep snapping on, we need to snap to existing nodes. Put them to the center top of the pocket, to the center hem, to the side bottom of the pocket. Press Enter. We still have two gaps along the princess seam. With Node tool, click the top part of the pocket, hold Shift, click the pocket opening. Select two nodes of those paths closest together (pull around them or click with Shift). Use 'Join selected endpoint nodes with new segment' on the panel or Alt J. New straight segment appears. Do the same for the bottom gap. The seam is curved there, so change the stroke color to see better and curve the segment to match the seam. 'Snapping to path' should help here too. After that we can pull the pocket away. I add seam allowances with Ctrl D, End and Path/Outset to all shapes. Side can be mirrored and used at that point. Front needs seam allowance removed along the fold and from the neckline (since I planned neck binding). To remove it from the fold, use Rectangle tool and cover the SA with that rectangle. Then add the center front SA shape to the selection and Path/Difference. It cuts the top path from the bottom. To cut neckline SA grab the Path tool. Visually continue the sewing line and put the node on the SA line, then sewing line, then just click away from it until you are at the starting point. The resulting shape should cover the SA we want to remove completely. Difference will remove that shape from SA only leaving the sewing lines intact. Duplicate, mirror (H) and move the copy to make full pattern piece. Do the same with the pocket piece. If your pattern has seam allowances you'd need to add them to the new seam lines only, main 'Add seam allowance' video ( • Add seam allowance to pattern pieces in In... ) more or less covers that but I don't create any separate pieces there. This tutorial is made with fabric layouts ( • Layout sewing pattern pieces in Inkscape: ... ) in mind. I'll probably make another colorblocking video for a pattern with seam allowances. Maybe for leggings :) Projector by Econceptive from the Noun Project #projectorsewing #opensourcesoftware
