Born Atiyat Abdul Fattah Ibrahim on April 26, 1953 in the shaabi Embaba neighborhood of Giza. One of twelve children, her father was a police sergeant. She quit school early and ran away from home to dance with the Akef folklore troupe at age 12. Her dance career took off in the early 1970s, when she became the headliner at the Arizona nightclub. She later performed at Le Meridien, Mena House, and the El Gezira Sheraton. Her performances were varied and lavish, lasting around two hours, and included circus tricks, singing, and extravagant costumes.The rumor is that by the time she retired in 2004 she owned 5000 costumes. Despite her success, Fif faced criticism by conservatives in Egypt for her dancing. in 1991 she was even sentenced to three months in jail for “depraved movement.” Her dancing is described as "minimalist" by dancers, with her fame attributed to her rapport with the audience; playful gestures, humor, stage presence, varied emotional content, and intimate eye contact. Her first movie roles were as a dancer; which eventually led to leading roles (Enaas al-Daghdaghy’s film “Imraa Wahida la Takffy,” One Women Is not Enough), and a long, fruitful acting career in cinema, theater and television, particularly the lead in the 2006 Ramadan drama, Souq El Khudar (The Vegetable Market) Fifi was also known for her many charitable contributions. Fifi has been married five times, but mostly to her current husband (since 1987) the Palestinian businessman Muhammad Al Derawi, Egypt's ambassador to Greenland. They have a daughter, Hanadi Muhammad Al Derawi. Fifi also had another daughter, Azza Mujahed, with her first husband Kamal Mujahed, who she married in 1975. Azza is also an actress and has a daughter of her own, Quisha Mujahid. Fifi adopted a third daughter in the 1990's as a favor to Tahiya Carioka before she died.
