Trainer Nakagaki is a man who could be called a "mentor," having worked closely with Ohtani since shortly after graduating from high school, helping him achieve his dual-role. Furthermore, Nakagaki is well-known for supporting the legendary Yu Darvish behind the scenes. Many top players have come out of the Nippon-Ham Fighters, and his presence is a key factor in why the team's training program is so highly regarded. Nakagaki had the following to say about Ohtani's natural physical traits: "Not only is he tall, but his limbs are long, and he has a blessed skeletal structure. His movements are flexible yet springy. I felt that he possessed both flexibility and springiness as soon as he joined the Nippon-Ham Fighters. You could say he has natural talent, and that's certainly true, but he also has innate athletic ability and the tenacity to later develop his skills and stamina." Ohtani possesses a large physique that is unusual for a Japanese player, but Nakagaki says he has spared no effort in further improving it. Nakagaki also had the following to say about Ohtani's dedication to training during his first year with the Nippon-Ham Fighters: "Ohtani never lets on his face that it's tough. He trains patiently and never complains. He never says, 'I don't want to do this today because my body is so tired.' I think he knows better than anyone that if he said that, he'd lose both his ability to pitch and hit. He's a player with an incredible capacity for completing whatever he sets his mind to. I immediately sensed that after spending a few months with him." As Nakagaki explains, Ohtani had natural talent. However, when he turned pro, he was still thin and lacked the power to hit home runs like he does now in the majors.
