This region of South Kaushal has been a symbol of the Ramayana era culture. One such site of historical, archaeological, and cultural significance is Ramgarh, located in Surguja district. Ramgarh Hill is located near the Udaipur Block Headquarters, approximately 50 kilometers from the Surguja divisional headquarters, Ambikapur. From a distance, this hill resembles a sitting elephant. Its height is approximately 3,202 feet above sea level. Shadows of Ramgarh Mountain, the site of the creation of the great poet Kalidasa's unique work Meghdootam and renowned as the world's oldest rock theatre. To preserve and promote this historical heritage, the Ramgarh Festival is held annually on the first day of Ashadha. Situated on the lower peak of the naturally beautiful Ramgarh mountain, the Sitabengara and Jogimara caves are of paramount importance as the oldest rock theatres. These caves are believed to date back to the Mauryan period, dating back to the third century BCE. The Jogimara cave contains inscriptions in the Mauryan Brahmi script, and the Sitabengara cave contains inscriptions in the Gupta Brahmi script. The Jogimara cave contains the oldest extant examples of Indian wall paintings. Sculptures, inscriptions, and copper plates are of great importance as archaeological documents. Such significant objects are available in Ramgarh. Approximately eight statues are preserved in the Jogimara cave. The shape, height, and style of carving of these statues clearly indicate that these sculptures were created in the Rajput style. The Rajput style is characterized by a prominent face, a long nose, a narrow waist, a prominent buttocks, and a semi-angular shape of the thighs and calves. The claws and other features are well preserved. The contemplative expression on the faces of the statues appears to be distinct from the Rajput style. These facts suggest that these statues date back approximately 2,000 years. Two inscriptions are present on the upper part of Ramgarh Hill. The script of these inscriptions, carved on stone with a sharp chisel, resembles Pali and somewhat Kharosthi. Script experts unanimously consider it to be Pali script. The lotus-like shape carved on it appears mysterious. The shape appears more like a seed than a seed. Sanskrit during the Ramayana period The evidence for Lord Rama's visit to Ramgarh, according to the Adhyatma Ramayana, is that Maharishi Jamadagni gave him the arrow Prasthalik, given by Lord Shiva, which he used to destroy Ravana. The Maheshpur forest near Ramgarh was the sage's place of penance. This makes it clear that during his exile, Lord Rama visited Maharishi Jamadagni's ashram and, with the sage's permission, stayed in Ramgarh for a few days. Ramgarh's connection to the great poet Kalidasa Connection Ramgarh is considered the site of the epic poem Meghdootam by the great poet Kalidasa. After the Sanskriti Academy, Bhopal, paid special attention to this, Ramgarh became a focus of archaeological research. The inscription "Kalidaasam" was found approximately 10 feet above the ground. Linking the three words together, they concluded that poet Kalidasa must have composed Meghdootam here. Next to Sitabengra, there is a convenient tunnel called Hathi Pol. It is approximately 180 feet long and its entrance is approximately 55 feet high. A stream flows from one end of the tunnel. Elephants can easily pass through this tunnel, hence its name Hathi Pol. Within the tunnel, a cool water pond has formed due to seepage from the mountain and other geological influences. The Kalidasa-era theatre and inscriptions, the natural images of Meghdootam, the allusions to the Valmiki Ramayana, the Tumburu account described as the foundation story of Meghdootam, and the forest path of Lord Rama are all considered to be Ramgarh.
