Some came to Switzerland as children and had to witness how local political and social developments bypassed their parents. Others arrived as adults with a wealth of life experience from their countries of origin. What they have in common is a strong desire to participate in the political debate. More and more migrants are becoming involved in Swiss politics. Foreign-sounding names have become an integral part of electoral lists, even if in many cases they are only listed as fillers. They are bridge builders: They came to Switzerland as children or young adults and are familiar with the local political landscape. They are intimately familiar with the life stories of migrants and can therefore contribute to clarifying the integration debate. Sometimes a lack of language skills is a stumbling block, but they are by no means relegated to a corner. Getting their own countrymen interested in local politics remains a major challenge. Their own cultural background and experiences in two worlds represent significant advantages in their political work. In his documentary, writer and documentary filmmaker Yusuf Yeşilöz follows Sibel Arslan, Rupan Sivaganesan, Haşim Sancar, and Yvette Estermann, politicians who immigrated to Switzerland from different countries and belong to different parties. He explores with them the challenges faced by migrants. His protagonists were elected with a good result right away – much to the surprise of themselves and their party. Although initially inexperienced, they soon grew into the political debate. They received votes across the various parties. Being pigeonholed puts obstacles in their path. Nevertheless, they have been actively involved for many years and harbor ambitions for further political office. They view their immigrant background as an opportunity and a new resource for Swiss politics.
