Lässt sich die Krise der Migration lösen? | Sternstunde Philosophie | SRF Kultur
Every year, over a thousand people die trying to flee across the Mediterranean. At the EU's external borders, asylum seekers are deterred by fences and violence. How can we control migration without violence and death? Yves Bossart discusses this with the renowned migration expert Gerald Knaus. Topics in this episode: 00:00 Humane control of migration: Is it possible? 14:49 Is there an "asylum chaos" in Europe? 27:59 Does the safe third country approach work? 38:09 Criticism of the safe third country approach 46:47 How much migration can a society tolerate? There's talk of an "asylum chaos." Right-wing populist parties are celebrating successes because they demand a restrictive asylum policy. The EU has also tightened its migration policy. What's happening right now? And what could a humane and just migration policy look like? Austrian social scientist and migration researcher Gerald Knaus is considered a leading figure in the 2016 EU-Turkey migration agreement. He is a founding member of the European Stability Initiative and currently advises numerous governments. His core demand is: We need control combined with empathy. Border protection, yes, but humane. Knaus wants—as some EU countries are currently doing—to outsource asylum procedures from Europe to safe third countries with which agreements are concluded. This would prevent people without a chance of asylum from even embarking on the dangerous journey to Europe. But is this morally justifiable? Border control, yes, but humane.
