Several conditions and situations can cause this symptom, such as wearing tight clothing, pregnancy, and direct injury to the nerve. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is a large sensory nerve. It travels from the spinal cord through the pelvic region and down the outer thigh. This compression can happen due to swelling and inflammation, injury, or pressure. Most cases improve with conservative treatment, such as losing weight, wearing loose-fitting clothing, or avoiding certain restrictive items, such as belts. Physical therapy can help treat more severe or persistent cases. Rarely, surgery is needed to correct compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Healthcare professionals usually only recommend surgery for people who have tried other treatments but still have symptoms.
