Rome's war with the allies (bellum sociale) was one of the bloodiest and most devastating conflicts in the history of the Roman Republic. Its citizens, for decades without a rival enemy among the Mediterranean states, would finally find one... in the form of their former allies from Italy, led by the Marsi and Samnite tribes. The immediate cause of the war at the turn of 91 and 90 BC was the tribunate of Marcus Livius Drusus, who desperately sought to reconcile the feuding citizens of the Republic.
