The Berlin Wall appeared in just one night – from August 12 to 13, 1961. It came as an unpleasant surprise to the city's residents, dividing family and friends. On October 27, 1961, American troops attempted to destroy the wall. Berlin's Friedrichstrasse became the site of a tank standoff between the two great powers.
