The Polish-Swedish War (1600-1611) was a continuation of the struggle between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of Livonia, and between the Swedish King Charles IX Vasa and the Polish King Sigismund III Vasa for control of the Baltic Sea basin. In the opening battle of Kokenhausen in 1601, Polish forces defeated Swedish troops besieging the Polish garrison and destroyed units rushing to the Swedish aid. The Battle of Kircholm in 1605 was decided after a devastating twenty-minute hussar charge. Both battles are remembered in history as major victories for the hussars, capable of achieving success against a numerically superior enemy.
