We recently spent a night here and walked around downtown after eating dinner at the Pine Country Restaurant. The town has maintained its historic charm! Williams, Arizona proclaims itself as the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon," attracting countless visitors who use Williams as a base for exploring the majestic natural wonder. Williams was founded in 1881 by a man named Bill Williams, who was a legendary mountain man and guide in the Old West. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, later known as the Santa Fe Railroad, arrived in the area in 1882. Williams quickly developed into a vital rail hub, serving as a gateway to the Grand Canyon and a key stop along the transcontinental railroad route. The town's strategic location made it a crucial point for trading, shipping goods, and transporting passengers. In the early 20th century, the construction of Route 66, one of America's most iconic highways, further enhanced Williams' significance. The town became a popular stopping point for travelers making their way westward.
