So, one thing I failed to reference in the video that JD mentioned in a comment is that: the positioning of the crutches being located at or behind the halfway point of the stair tread you are going down to keeps your body weight rearward. Thus, if you slip or loose balance, you'll most likely fall into the stairs. Albeit, a painful experience, but it greatly reduces the possibility for a forward fall that would have far worse consequences! And then of course when going up stairs, putting the foot up first should keep you in a position to fall forward if something were to happen.
