Pithkiavli: Traditional River Cane Flute of Cypriot shepherds and How to Make it

A rivercane is all you need to make this traditional Cypriot shepherd flute called Pithkiavli. I never had the chance to hear my grandpa playing his shepherd flute, but I grew up with his story about it. He used to tell me that as a kid, he had to stay all day and night in the watermelon fields to guard them from birds. The summer hit made him sleepy, but he had to stay awake. So he was making this rivercane flute to keep him company and kill his time. Under the shadow of his shelter, he was creating songs and trying to become a better player. He told me: “I wasn’t the best at playing Pithkiavli. I preferred to dance. But at list it was keeping me awake and the birds were afraid of the sound, so they didn’t damage the watermelons”. For this video, I would really want to thank Mr. Charalambos who gave me some guidance on how to make a traditional Pithkiavli. Without his knowledge, this video would have been almost impossible to achieve. #flute #pithkiavli #traditionalinstruments STAY CONNECTED » Instagram:   / joyoforigins   » Facebook:   / joyoforigins
