Imaginar a escravidão no Oceano Índico: visualidades e narrativas - Profª Drª Patrícia Faria (UFRRJ)

The African and Asian Studies Group of the Federal University of Paraná welcomes participants and attendees to the II GEAFRAS Week of Afro-Asian Studies. In this year of 2026, we will work with the theme "Chimeric Orient: the imagery of Afro-Asian spaces," in an effort to encourage reflection and debate on the construction, use, and reproduction of images of a supposed Orient. The objective is to explore, dissect, and understand to what extent images represent non-Western societies, what Orient is imagined from them, its intrinsic orientalisms, and the intentions behind these cultural, political, and social constructions. The image here is also conceived as imagery, not being reduced to visual sources, but dealing with the conception and propagation of a certain worldview.
