Did Rufio Deserve to Die? (Oblivion Dark Brotherhood Lore)
Rufio may not be as innocent as he is portrayed by Lucien Lachance. Let's explore Rufio's backstory and understand why he became a Dark Brotherhood contract target. I'll be going through the ENTIRE Dark Brotherhood quest line in Oblivion, so check out that series in the playlist linked below. Today, we will be learning more about Rufio, our first target in the Dark Brotherhood quest line. When we kill a NPC in Oblivion, we are visited in our sleep by a dark-robed man named Lucien Lachance. Lucien is a speaker for the Dark Brotherhood and offers us the opportunity to join this assassins' cult. To complete our initiation we are asked to kill a man named Rufio, who is holed up in the Inn of Ill Omen. Lucien tells us: "Know that Rufio is old and weak, and sleeps his days away. You could kill him before he even has a chance to wake. If you so choose." In most playthroughs, I simply killed Rufio in his sleep. But there are actually lots of in-game clues that hint about Rufio's past and tell us why he was targeted for assassination. If we speak with Rufio, we learn that he killed a woman and knows that the Dark Brotherhood is after him. We can also learn who hired the Dark Brotherhood to kill him from an edition of The Black Horse Courier, entitled "Night Mother Rituals." The newspaper tells us about Claudius Arcadia, a resident of the Imperial City's Talos Plaza District, who was imprisoned for performing the Black Sacrament (which summons the Dark Brotherhood for a hit contract). If we visit the Imperial Prison we can speak with Claudius. We can also locate his journal in his former home, which has been converted into a local Imperial Guard outpost (be careful when sneaking around in there, as it is a crime, and the guards will try to arrest you if your'e caught). All these clues show us that Rufio was not just an innocent, weak old man (as I first thought him to be when I first played this game back in high school). He was a murderer and was on the run from the Dark Brotherhood. So do you think he deserved to die? Let me know in the comments.
