What are the fiscal costs of climate change mitigation and damage?

Climate change is having a material impact on the economy which has serious implications for the long term stability of the public finances. The fiscal watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), has been incorporating climate change impacts into its long term fiscal analysis since the publication of its 2021 Fiscal Risks report, which focused on the long term fiscal costs of climate change mitigation. This analysis has been updated in its 2024 Fiscal Risks and Sustainability report which widens the scope to estimate the potential long term impact of climate damage to the economy and public finances. On Wednesday 4 December 2024 Green Alliance hosted a presentation and panel discussion with OBR economists, who presented the findings of their latest report.
