Shades Of Black and Grey

Shades of Black and Grey has a long and close connection with the heritage of the Swadlincote area. The lyrics have been used in a number of ways over the years, including their inclusion in Swadlincote Heritage Trail 2, published by South Derbyshire District Council. Many people familiar with the town will also recognise the heritage lecterns positioned around Swadlincote, marking key sites and stories from its industrial past. One such lectern, located in the Pipework near the statue of the two miners, permanently records the song’s words — a testament to how closely they reflect the history and character of the area. Originally written in 2016, the song was inspired by Johnny Cash’s Forty Shades of Green. It has been performed locally ever since, regularly supporting the Magic Attic Archive in Swadlincote and other charities, and has always been a favourite with audiences. Concerts held inside one of the old kilns became memorable events in their own right, drawing large audiences and combining live performance with lighting effects and projected images from the Magic Attic Archive. This film builds on those performances, taking the visuals further and using archive material to explore the creative possibilities of the song, while celebrating and honouring the industrial heritage of Swadlincote.
