Cochlear implants work differently: they bypass the damaged part of the ear and stimulate the auditory nerve directly. Cochlear implants take over the function of the damaged sensory hair cells in the inner ear (1, 2, 3). A cochlear implant system consists of two components: an external sound processor; an inner ear implant, which is inserted by a surgeon under the skin. The implant contains an electrode array that is inserted into the cochlea.
