All three parts work together to transmit sound to the brain. With normal hearing, sounds are detected by the outer ear, which transmits them in the form of waves through the ear canal to the eardrum. These sound waves strike the eardrum and cause it to vibrate, causing the bones in the inner ear to move. A fluid in the inner ear, also called the cochlea, transmits this movement to tiny hair cells. The hair cells detect the movement and generate electrical impulses that are sent via the auditory nerve to the brain.
