These are some of the tips he came up with. Don't start on the root (too predictable). Don't start on the one, wait or use a pickup note. Then I showed him my "LOVE" method for coming up with melodies: lyrics, obvious, visual and expandable. We discussed how putting the guitar down and thinking lyrically makes you phrase different. Pete's favourite guitarists like Michael Landau or Jeff Beck are the ones who sing through the guitar.
