I almost didn't try this thing. It's a $129 plastic box - how useful can it be to upgrade vinyl. Then I put it in my system, played a record through my built-in preamp and then through the iFi Zen Air Phono 2 — and I couldn't go back. That's the whole problem with this one. Once you hear what your turntable was actually capable of, you can't unhear it. Keep in mind this the FIRST FIX for a budget to mid-level turntable with a built-in phono preamp that's being used. If you've got a modestly priced turntable, or you're running into the "phono" jack on an old receiver, you're hearing the cheapest part of the chain. The phono preamp is the invisible upgrade nobody talks about because it doesn't look like anything. This is me talking about it. No spec-sheet lecture, no impedance homework — just whether this $129 box is worth your money, and exactly who should (and shouldn't) buy it.
