Alsace outguns Richelieu by 50% and carries dramatically better overhead armour — her 285mm deck versus Richelieu's 185mm means she operates safely at ranges where Richelieu is already vulnerable to plunging fire. The critical asymmetry: 12 guns vs 8 — same calibre, +50% broadside weight. Richelieu's only path: land an early hit on one of Alsace's three turrets before the volume of fire tells. Even if she succeeds, Alsace still has 8 guns — exactly what Richelieu started with. A hit on either of Richelieu's forward turrets cuts her battery by half.
