In this class, we will divide the content into Background, Causes, the Conflict Itself, and Consequences. 00:53 to 1:33 - When we talk about the context prior to the War, we are talking about the Belle Époque. There was a belief in a continuous process, in the context of the Industrial Revolution with technological advances and economic prosperity. In contrast to this optimistic environment, we also have the Armed Peace: alliances are being forged, plotting an environment of increasingly foreseeable war. 1:34 to 4:05 - So what are the main causes of war? Imperialism and nationalism. When we talk about imperialist disputes, it is worth remembering that the Scramble for Africa had important chapters that granted privileges to some countries, such as England and France, while countries like Italy and Germany did not. But what was of interest to these countries in Africa? In the midst of the Second Industrial Revolution, we have the major European powers in need of raw materials, energy sources, cheap labor, consumer markets, etc. Africa, Asia, and Oceania were the main targets of these powers. 4:06 to 6:52 - Another important cause is nationalist disputes. Here we have three important nationalist movements: French Revanchism (which led to the Franco-Prussian War, which France lost and was humiliated by the German Emperor, greatly affecting French nationalist sentiment); we also have the Turkish Question and the Balkan Question, the latter being the trigger for the war. 6:53 to 7:46 - Gradually, two alliances are formed. The Entente Alliance will include Russia, Serbia, England, and France. On the other side, we have the Triple Alliance with Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Italy. 7:47 to 10:00 - The war is divided into two phases. The initial phase is an old-fashioned war, called a war of movement, with the idea of advancing and forcing submission. However, the war ended up dragging on for a long time, with enemies far apart, making it difficult to maintain a mobile war. This is where trench warfare emerged: the idea now was to attack strategic points such as ports, bridges, etc. 10:01 to 11:19 - There was an outside country that was profiting greatly from the war until then: the United States. It exported food, textiles, and war goods to England and France, in addition to granting loans to these countries. In other words, if they lost the war, the United States would have its debtors defeated and under German control. To avoid this, the United States entered the war and determined victory for the Triple Entente. 11:20 to 13:18 - The consequences of the war were numerous. The Treaty of Versailles was signed, imposing severe conditions on Germany. To comply with this treaty, the League of Nations was created—but the United States did not support it. This is because American President Woodrow Wilson advocated a "peace without victors" in the so-called Wilsonian 14 Points. We can therefore conclude that the League of Nations would not be very successful, and this would create conditions for Germany to once again implement expansionist policies in the 1930s, when Hitler came to power, thus triggering a new conflict: World War II. 1:19 PM to 2:10 PM - During World War I, many men went to the front lines, leaving women to assume the role of head of household. Thus, women gained increasing political influence, and one consequence of this was the suffrage movement for women's right to vote. 2:11 PM to 3:12 PM - Another consequence was the Dadaist movement, which aimed to create "anti-art." These artists concluded that war stemmed from reason, so the movement's idea was to be irrational.
