LUIS GARCÍA BERLANGA IN DEPTH - February 3, 1980 - 56 minutes Luis García-Berlanga (Valencia, 1921 - Madrid, 2010) is a Spanish director and screenwriter. He studied law and philosophy and literature, but dropped out in 1947 to enroll at the Madrid Institute of Cinematographic Research and Experience, where he later became a professor. There, he befriended Juan Antonio Bardem, with whom he shot his first film, "That Happy Couple" (1951). In 1952, he soloed, shooting "Bienvenido Mr. Marshall," with a script by Berlanga, Bardem, and Miguel Mihura, which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1961, in collaboration with Rafael Azcona, he shot "Plácido," a denunciation of the social hypocrisy of the time, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1963, also with Azcona, he made "El Verdugo," which won the Critics' Award at the Venice Film Festival and is considered the best film in Spanish cinema. It received the following awards: the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1986, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts in 1981, and the National Film Award in 1980. In recent years, he served as president of the National Film Library of Spain and director of the erotic short story collection La sonrisa vertical (The Vertical Smile). In 1978, he made "La escopeta nacional" (The National Shotgun), a resounding success that would be repeated with the next film in the series, "Patrimonio nacional" (National Heritage), in 1981.
