We Found Sections of FS Road 73 That Haven't Seen Vehicles in Years

Could we drive Forest Service Road 73 from Morton, WA all the way to Milton, WA in our classic 1977 Jeep CJ5? That was the mission for this Trail & Tread Adventures exploration into the backroads of Washington. Starting near Morton, Washington, we headed deep into the forest along FS Road 73, hoping to reconnect an old route through the mountains. What we found was a true Pacific Northwest off-road adventure — tight forest roads, steep drop-offs, massive washouts, and sections that looked like they hadn’t seen a vehicle in years. Our rebuilt 1977 Jeep CJ5 has been through a lot lately, including a new transmission and transfer case, so this trip also turned into another test of how the old Jeep performs on rough backcountry trails. We managed to travel about 15 miles into the mountains, navigating narrow sections and rough terrain before the road finally became completely impassable.
