How To Make Rope Vines
Note - If you can find black Great Stuff instead of the regular yellow USE IT! With black you can skip the brown base coat for an even easier build. Go straight to the khaki dry brush, stain, then seal with a clear rubber spray like Gorilla, Plastidip, or Flex Seal. I think what I used was 3/4 inch rope, but this 1/2 inch cotton rope should work fine too if you want to use black rope and black Great Stuff like I did - https://amzn.to/3cv9IsY And This is very similar to the twine I used to wrap my rope and make the side shoots - https://amzn.to/3v0Wpar This project is not an original idea and variations on it have been done by a number of creators to make vines for everything from reptile vivariums to haunts to movie and stage sets. They all share the same design of using rope as a base to create a realistic vine. The ones I have made here are not suitable for use with live animals and are for decoration only. Latex can be used instead of Great Stuff foam for coating the vines, but since I have a surplus of Great Stuff sitting in the shop I went with that. Constructing the basic form for these is pretty easy, but things get a little more complicated when it comes to painting them because of all of the texture that needs to be painted. A brush will work, but take a long time, dipping the rope into paint works pretty good, but can create a HUGE mess due to drips. Spraying the rope with either a spray gun, or spray paint seems to be the most practical option. USE BLACK GREAT STUFF AND IT WILL BE EASIER. My vines were painted to match the vines and pumpkins I have already made over the years for our haunt. They could have been painted with more green to create the look of living vines, or even sprayed with adhesive and covered with moss or coconut husk to make more realistically textured vines. There are so many possibilities for variation in this project! And they are pretty inexpensive to make! Go nuts and experiment!
