Let's take a look at the result (00:01:31). We went for a two-tone silver-on-black look for this rebuild. A compatible primer was firstly applied by the power coaters. The primary powder is named Aztec Silver (under the Dulux Surreal Effects line) and offers a classic hammered finish. The secondary colour is Satin Black and it has a smooth finish (almost matte). Both powders appear very hard-wearing. As a test, we took one of the sample chips to a limestone wall and were amazed by the effort required to scratch it! All of the work was done by Perth Powder Coaters in Belmont, Western Australia (00:00:26) 🌐 https://www.perthpowdercoaters.com.au For about $200, John finished all of the mower parts left with him, including the catcher and handlebars. We painted the reel ourselves. Powder coating the handlebars was presumably more cost-effective than having the chrome re-done (ymmv). Having these parts professionally coated was money well spent. The result was impeccable and, considering the material cost to do your own painting, the premium was minor. Even if you're not planning to powder coat your mower, you may wish to consider having it professionally painted. We should have addressed the dents in the catcher and chain cover before having them painted (00:06:56). Unfortunately, the hammered coating reflects light from every dent. Doing it again, we would take these pieces to the panel beaters beforehand. Note you may need to use a powder coat-compatible bog/filler if you're doing your own panel work. As with any paint or coating, you'll also want to avoid covering shafts and similar areas (a powder coated finish can be easily removed as required using sandpaper). The powder coaters will typically use special tapes for masking but I sent some pieces in with 3M-brand blue painters tape and it did the job (it dries out in the oven). If you're replacing the fasteners as part of your rebuild, consider using old fasteners to block out threaded holes and other areas where don't want finish. You can order free colour sample chips directly from Dulux (00:00:52) 🌐 https://duluxpowders.com.au Powder coating may not be for you. There is a view that powder coat is hygroscopic and will therefore permit the transmission of moisture through the finish layer to the underlying material (i.e. steel). The powders used in the powder coating process are hygroscopic before they've been through the oven. Once baked, however, a powder coated finish is claimed to be waterproof. Perhaps more commonly, a powder coated finish can chip if damaged, allowing corrosion to affect the underlying metal.
