David Nedel – Haben wir noch die Macht über unsere Systeme?
When technology becomes so powerful that its inner workings are hidden, the freedom to shape things is in danger of collapsing. In conversation with Mathias Harrassowitz and Christian Granseier, David Nedel warns that the growing complexity of systems in companies is unconsciously becoming an instrument of power. Only those who have mastered decades-old IT architectures possess the authority to interpret them today. When these knowledge holders retire, a loss of control is imminent. The solution lies not in dismantling the system, but in the consistent democratization of this knowledge. This question of power becomes even more pressing with the advent of AI. David emphasizes: Algorithms have no will of their own; they merely execute human design decisions. It would be ethical bankruptcy to reap the efficiency gains of automation while blaming the machine for errors. Responsibility cannot be delegated. Therefore, we must write values directly into the code: An algorithm must not merely maximize profit, but must do so without discriminating against any particular group. This requires a new culture of skepticism. Developers must be encouraged to voice ethical concerns when a model disadvantages older customers. While the machine calculates what is technically possible, it remains the inherently human prerogative to question whether it is also right. Empathy, individual justice, and genuine regret in times of crisis cannot be programmed. Ultimately, leadership will no longer be merely managing implementers, but rather shaping autonomous systems. Whether a "Chief of Ethics" will soon be sitting at the board table remains to be seen – but the need for ethical guidelines is already clear.
