Linzhou (林州), located at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, suffered from droughts and crop failures since ancient times due to its geological inability to store water. This harsh history, marked by records of cannibalism, was brought to an end by the Great Wall of Water, the Hongqiqu (红旗渠). Using only hammers and chisels, the government and local residents worked together to carve through the mountain and rock face in just nine years, completing the artificial canal. It spans a staggering 1,500 km. We walk along this vast waterway, a modern-day miracle of the Foolish Old Man Moving Mountains. The 623-meter-long Qingniandong (青年洞) tunnel, built by the combined efforts of over 300 young people, is considered one of the most challenging sections of construction. We meet local residents who strive to uphold their indomitable spirit. We visit another famous site, often called the miracle of the Taihang Mountains. Guoliang Village (郭亮村), a remote area surrounded by rugged mountains on three sides and cliffs on the other. Forcing the villagers to navigate steep mountain paths to get out, they began carving a path through the cliff in 1972. Armed with hammers and chisels, the residents completed the tunnel after five years of hard work. Named Guoliangdong (郭亮洞), the tunnel has now become a more famous tourist attraction than the village itself. Within the Guoliang Cave, carved into the heart of a sheer cliff, traces of the sweat and hard work of the locals, who dug a 1.2-kilometer-long cave with their bare hands, remain. Our final destination is the Taihang Grand Canyon. At Wangxiangyan (王相岩, meaning "King and Prime Minister's Rock"), we hear the fascinating tale of the Shang Dynasty's Wu Ding (武丁), the revivalist general, and Prime Minister Fu Yue (傅說).
