Lord Byron Called Her Mad, Bad, And Dangerous. What She Did Next Proved Him Right: Caroline Lamb
In 1812, a 26-year-old aristocrat married to a future Prime Minister threw herself into the most public love affair Regency London had ever seen. Lady Caroline Lamb was the niece of the Duchess of Devonshire, raised in one of the grandest houses in England, and within months of meeting Lord Byron she had scandalised an entire city. She sent him a lock of her own intimate hair. She dressed as a page boy to reach his rooms. And on the 5th of July 1813, at a ball in Berkeley Square, she seized a broken wine glass and cut herself in front of 300 of the most powerful people in the country. The phrase that survives her, "mad, bad, and dangerous to know," was her verdict on him. The story of how it came to be pinned on her instead is darker than the affair that made her famous. Subscribe to the channel: @OpulentAffairs In this video, we talk about the full life and ruin of Lady Caroline Lamb, including her childhood inside the open scandals of Devonshire House, the arranged marriage to William Lamb that began as a love match, the six-month affair with Byron conducted through her own mother-in-law, the disabled son the couple refused to send away, the effigy she burned at Brocket Hall, the tell-all novel Glenarvon that destroyed her socially, her slow decline into laudanum and dropsy, the husband who crossed a winter sea to her deathbed, and his astonishing rise to Prime Minister and mentor of Queen Victoria. Subscribe and stay for the lives the polite histories leave in the margins.
