Stuart Roy Clarke at Britannia V Coniston | Match 2 | Video Diary #6

Stuart Roy Clarke continues his Homes of Football journey with a visit to Britannia, near Barrow-in-Furness, for the return fixture against Coniston after the previous 2-2 draw in the shadow of the fells. This time the setting feels different. Stuart finds a ground with something of rugby about it, where posts rise into the windy, remote Cumbrian backdrop and the game unfolds with its own strange energy. There is no beer to fuel the Britannia number 9 this week, and Coniston bring a new kind of preparation, with elaborate stretching routines that appear almost ritualistic, including one memorable move known as the “Lazy Sex” position. As the match builds, the temperature rises. Strong words are vented at half time, with the Coniston right back taking the full force of some four-letter Britannia-style encouragement. A raw, funny and windswept encounter from the wilds of Cumbria, where grassroots football once again proves that the stories around the game can be just as memorable as the football itself. Another Saturday. Another ground. Another story beyond the ninety minutes.
