Shot Dead at 3 AM: The Journalist Delhi Failed For 15 Years | Crime Seen

A deserted stretch of Nelson Mandela Marg in South Delhi. It’s 3:45 AM on 30 September 2008. A small car stands still after hitting the divider, headlights on, engine running, but the driver inside is unconscious. This is the chilling story of Soumya Vishwanathan, a 25-year-old journalist working with Headlines Today, who was shot while driving back home after a late-night shift. What initially appeared to be an accident soon turned into a shocking case of senseless violence. A gang roaming the empty roads of South Delhi in a maroon WagonR was targeting lone commuters, looking for easy victims. That night, Soumya’s car crossed paths with them, and within minutes, a gunshot ended her life. The case had no eyewitnesses, no direct evidence, only a bullet shell and CCTV clues, making the investigation very difficult. It took another similar crime to finally crack the case and identify the accused. From 2008 to 2023, the journey to justice stretched over 15 long years, with hundreds of hearings and dozens of witnesses. In the end, the court found all accused guilty, bringing some closure to a family that never gave up.
