From Martin Serrano to Martinez - A Founding New Mexico Family's Story

These historical records chronicle the life and legacy of Hernán Martín Serrano, an early Spanish settler who participated in the 1598 Oñate expedition to New Mexico. Born in Zacatecas, he became a foundational resident of Santa Fe, serving as a soldier and sergeant while raising a family that would eventually become the large Martínez clan. The sources highlight his interactions with Pueblo Indian leaders and his relationship with Doña Inés, an acculturated Tano woman who mothered his namesake son. His other son, Luis Martín Serrano, served as a prominent local official in the Tewa jurisdiction and managed a successful estate until his death in 1661. Collectively, these documents provide a detailed genealogical and military history of a pioneering family navigating the complexities of the northern frontier. Through centuries of adaptation, the family name evolved from Martín to the modern surname used by many descendants today. Thanks to Jose Antonio Esquibel!
