Hidden Heritage of New Mexico: Then & Now - The 400 Year Old Secret
For many generations New Mexico has been a place for the descendants of the secret Jews of Spain who were persecuted by the Inquisition after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Today they are known as Crypto-Jews or the Anusim. Despite destructions and attempted annihilations in Israel, Jews multiplied and prospered in Sephard/Spain as they ushered in the Golden Age of "revival" in all aspects of life during the Middle Ages. However, in the midst of major breakthroughs, the Spanish inquisition's 300 year-long holocaust expelled them from the land their forefathers had founded thousands of years earlier. Consequently, many Crypto Jews fled across the Atlantic into America. Crypto Anusim Conquistadores, soldiers and explorers came to the new world. In 1598 Dan Juan Onate lead a group of fellow Crypto Jews into New Mexico where their descendants have lived in virtual hiding for hundreds of years. Today, we have evidence in the social sciences as well as in genetic DNA testing.
