England’s first secure school to close over serious safety concerns
Oasis Restore – the first secure school in England and Wales - was to be the brave new world of youth justice when it opened last year. Its founder, the Reverend Steve Chalke, proclaimed it as offering "justice and hope" to children detained for the most serious crimes – a second chance to build a future. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) But Channel 4 News can reveal that the school in Kent is having to close temporarily and the children moved out to other premises. Despite tens of millions of pounds spent on the building, security doors have proved not fit for purpose after many of them were damaged by the children, and the school has become impossible to run safely.
