In this video, I break down the growing concern around possible unrest, anti-immigration protests, counter-protests, political opportunism, looting, and the wider anger many South Africans feel after decades of failed promises, unemployment, corruption, collapsing services and economic decline. I look at the major groups likely to be involved, including March and March supporters, government officials, political parties, activists, ordinary citizens and outside organisations with their own interests. I also lay out several possible scenarios for June 30: from peaceful marches that end without major incident, to localised violence and unrest, prolonged protests, disruption to businesses, and the worst-case possibility of events spiralling beyond anyone’s control. This is not a prediction and it is not an attempt to create panic. It is a discussion about being realistic, staying informed, preparing responsibly and understanding why frustration in South Africa has reached this point.
