Prueba VDRL para sífilis 🔬 Procedimiento real, lectura e interpretación
The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test is one of the most widely used clinical laboratory tests for screening, diagnosing, and monitoring syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. This video demonstrates, in a practical and realistic way, how to perform the qualitative and semi-quantitative VDRL technique, including the direct observation of negative and positive samples, as well as the correct way to read, interpret, and report the results. Unlike rapid syphilis tests (reagent strips) that detect specific antibodies, the VDRL is a non-treponemal test that detects anticardiolipin antibodies, which appear in response to cell damage caused by the infection. For this reason, the VDRL is used both for initial screening and for monitoring treatment, since its titers decrease when therapy is effective. 🔬 In this video you will learn: ✔️ How to perform the VDRL flocculation technique step by step ✔️ Differences between qualitative and semi-quantitative VDRL (DILUTIONS) ✔️ How to identify a positive, negative, or inconclusive result ✔️ How to report titers or VDRL with dilutions (1:2, 1:4, 1:8, etc.) ✔️ Differences between VDRL and the rapid syphilis test ✔️ Real-life examples of positive and negative samples ✔️ False positives and false negatives of the VDRL test ✔️ When it is necessary to confirm with a treponemal test (FTA-ABS, TPHA, ELISA, etc.) 🧪 What does the VDRL test detect? The VDRL test does not directly detect Treponema pallidum, but rather antibodies produced against lipids released by damaged cells during infection. Therefore: It can be positive in cases of syphilis. But it can also be positive in other diseases. ⚠️ Causes of false positives in VDRL tests The VDRL test can be positive in people without syphilis, for example, in cases of: Lupus and autoimmune diseases Viral infections Tuberculosis Hepatitis Intravenous drug use Etc. Therefore, every positive VDRL test should be confirmed with a treponemal test. ❌ Causes of false negatives A VDRL test can be negative when: The infection is very recent (window phase) Syphilis is in very late stages The prozone phenomenon (excess antibodies) is present 📌 What is the VDRL test used for? ✔️ Syphilis Screening ✔️ Prenatal Care ✔️ Treatment Monitoring ✔️ Reinfection Assessment ✔️ Epidemiological Studies This video is for: Clinical Laboratory Students Medical Students Healthcare Professionals People who want to understand their VDRL results 🔔 Subscribe for more videos on serology, bacteriology, parasitology, clinical chemistry, and laboratory diagnostics. 📌 This content is educational and does not replace medical evaluation. #syphilis #serology #clinicalchemistryvalencia Video Chapters: 00:00 What is VDRL? 01:18 Materials used for the VDRL test 02:14 Qualitative technique for the VDRL test 03:41 Reading the VDRL test (examples of positive and negative tests) 04:51 VDRL dilution technique (semi-quantitative) 08:04 Reading the VDRL test with dilutions 09:24 VDRL technique in cerebrospinal fluid 09:58 Advantages and limitations of the VDRL test
