I Opened Menu #21... But Found Something Else! | 2022 MRE Mystery Menu

🇺🇸 2022 U.S. MRE Menu #21 – Tuna Chunk Light, Water Packed, Lemon Pepper (Mystery Repack Review) Welcome back to The MRE Experience! Today we're taking a look at one of the more unusual MRE discoveries I've encountered in my MRE for Newbies series. This ration is labeled as a genuine 2022 production U.S. Military MRE Menu #21, Tuna Chunk Light, Water Packed, Lemon Pepper from Case B. However, upon opening the meal, it quickly became apparent that the contents did not match the official menu configuration. Instead, this ration appears to have been assembled using substitute components normally associated with Menu #19 Beef Patty, Jalapeño Pepper Jack. Officially, Menu #21 was designed as one of the lighter and more refreshing menus in the modern MRE lineup. The lemon pepper tuna entrée provides a high-protein meal that can be eaten directly from the pouch or combined with the included snacks and accessories to create a wrap or improvised field meal. Tuna menus have long been popular among many service members because they offer a welcome alternative to heavier beef-based entrées while still delivering excellent nutrition and shelf stability. The official 2022 Menu #21 configuration typically included: • Tuna Chunk Light, Water Packed, Lemon Pepper • Multigrain snack bread or tortilla component • Cheddar cheese spread or related accessory item • Snack component • Dessert component • Beverage mix • Accessory packet and flameless ration heater What makes today's ration particularly interesting is that the contents did not reflect the official menu. Instead, the meal contained: • Beef Patty, Jalapeño Pepper Jack Entrée • Plain Tortilla Wrap • Reese's Pieces Candies • Cheez-It Crackers • Barbecue Sauce • Lemon-Lime Isotonic Beverage Powder • Marbled Pound Cake • Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread Taken together, these components strongly resemble elements normally found in Menu #19 Beef Patty, Jalapeño Pepper Jack rather than Menu #21 Tuna, Lemon Pepper. The beef patty and tortilla combination allows troops to create a handheld sandwich or wrap, while the barbecue sauce adds additional flavor to the entrée. The marbled pound cake paired with chocolate peanut butter spread creates a surprisingly rich dessert option, and the Cheez-Its and Reese's Pieces provide familiar comfort snacks that many service members enjoy. So why does this happen? Many collectors refer to these as "repack" or "substitution" MREs. During production, contractors must assemble millions of meals each year while maintaining strict delivery schedules. Occasionally, supply chain shortages, production delays, ingredient availability issues, packaging defects, or inventory imbalances can prevent a contractor from building a menu exactly according to specification. Rather than halt production, approved substitutions may be used to keep assembly lines moving and ensure military supply requirements are met. In some cases, an entrée shortage may result in another entrée being substituted. In other situations, side dishes, desserts, spreads, beverages, or snacks may be exchanged for similar components of comparable nutritional value. The goal is to maintain calorie counts, nutritional requirements, and logistical readiness while minimizing waste and preventing delays in delivery to military units. These substitution menus are not extremely common, but they are far from unheard of. Long-time MRE collectors occasionally encounter meals where one or more components differ from the published menu list. In rarer cases, an entire meal can appear to be assembled from another menu altogether, creating a true "mystery menu" experience like the one featured in today's review. For collectors and ration enthusiasts, these unexpected finds are part of what makes MRE collecting so interesting. Two meals carrying the same menu number can sometimes provide completely different experiences depending on where and when they were packed. Discoveries like this offer a fascinating glimpse into the realities of large-scale military food production and remind us that even standardized military rations can occasionally contain surprises. Have you ever opened an MRE and found components that didn't belong there?
