I Found Evidence of a WWII German Spy While Exploring Ancient Ruins in the American Southwest
In one of the most remote regions of the American Southwest, I stumbled upon a terrifying question: How does a WWII German artifact end up buried in the most isolated, untouched desert wilderness of North America? While scouring Google Earth, I found traces of a dirt road that seemed to go on forever. It finally ended on a cliff above a strangely lush and flourishing canyon. In November, I set out with extra fuel, a week’s worth of supplies, and my dog to see what secrets this canyon was hiding. This is about as far off grid as I’ve ever been, and the desert didn’t disappoint. These canyons came to life with elk, mountain lions, and packs of coyotes that reminded me who’s territory it really is. In the middle of it all, I find an old camp with evidence of a German spy from World War II. Further down the canyon, I find an ancient fortress built high into a cliff. The ancestral Pueblo built this sandstone castle centuries ago, before disappearing without a trace into the desert. No one knows where or why they left, and their fingerprints still mark the walls of this compound overlooking the canyon. Join me on an adventure that nearly rolls my Jeep, has packs of coyotes stalking me, and shows how wild the west really is. Pack your gear, check your water, we’re going somewhere the map forgot. I do this to help protect the mystery and pristine qualities of these places. I generally won't respond to comments asking for names of locations, and I appreciate those who already know for not naming them either. Thank you for understanding!
