Sporen van de Oorlog, deel 1/8

The first episode of "Traces of War" focuses on the German threat in May 1940. Margreet Beetsma visits casemates in Sleen and Oosterhesselerbrug and tries to understand how Drenthe was defended. Because of the looming threat of war, casemates were built in Drenthe as defensive structures. We visit two casemates in Noord-Sleen. They are clearly visible through the open landscape, making the defense structure clear. The surrounding area has remained largely unchanged since the war, and both bunkers are still intact. Two casemates can also be found north of the Oosterhesselerbrug (over the Verlengde Hoogeveensche Vaart canal between Oosterhesselen and Wachtum). On May 10, 1940, the easternmost casemate came under heavy fire, sustaining significant damage. How was Drenthe actually defended?
