This episode revolves around the Battle of Opheusden, a battle little known to the general public, but described by the American paratroopers as the most brutal and hard-fought battle they had fought during the entire war. The Germans wanted to recapture the East Betuwe region from Kesteren. At Opheusden, a confrontation ensued, with literally every inch of ground being fought over. The village street changed hands six times, and ultimately, neither side gained a single inch of territory. The Betuwe remained liberated until the Dodewaard-Kesteren line. A cat-and-mouse game ensued between the Germans and the Allies. One of the patrols became legendary: they were ordered to capture a German to learn what they were doing on the other side of the Rhine. But the patrol returned with 32 prisoners. And now the population was forced to flee, as the water, the centuries-old enemy of the river region's inhabitants, took over the land when the Germans breached the dike at Elden.
