SUMMERTIME George Gershwin (music), Ira Gershwin & DuBose Heyward (lyrics) feat. LOLA LO & RODRIGO BOTTER MAIO (all instruments & arrangement) Dear friends, I hope you all are doing well! Here I am posting my video Nr. 141 (since 141 weeks without stop!) of the serie MAKING MUSIC WITH MY FRIENDS and featuring this new friend and great singer LOLA LO with her amazing voice. ABOUT ME AND LOLA: One day her grandmother Stella Maris sent me a shot video through whatsapp, actually an invitation for a concert were Lola was singing a piece of Janis Joplin, a concert dedicated completely to her music. When I hear that I got crazy with her voice, asked her number and invited her to make a video with me. Right away she liked the ideia and then we started to check what would be possible. Sometimes (not summertimes rs) we thing that the world is big, but it is not: Stella Maris comes from Assis, the same city were my parents used to live, were they met, got married and stayed during many years until they moved to Campinas, were I was born. Stella was a Portuguese teacher and came to Switzerland, living in Winterthur and the Brazilian consul introduced us telling me: I know someone from Assis here in Switzerland! After many years, Stella went back to Brazil with her family and actually Lola is swiss, for my surprise :-) We never met personally (not yet) but in our modern times it is possible to make a recording like that, from far away. I encourage you to check some of her videos in her Instagram, great stuff. Well, when I saw that she was a Janis Joplin specialist I remembered that I made once this arrangement of SUMMERTIME with this 12/8 groove. I think it was something very new for her, but I really like the idea, bringing people to a new musical world, in this case a touch of jazz. Almost like all my arrangements, I didn't change a lot in the first A part, but when it repeats I put a complete new harmony to it. I was thinking about writing some sax pads harmonizing it, so that you could hear the chords even better. But I decided to leave it so clean as possible. Maybe I will make an instrumental version, them I will try that with 3 voices. Sometimes we play this arrangement in my WORKSHOPS FOR JAZZ, FUNK & POP MUSIC. ABOUT THIS SONG: This song ist actually a part of the Opern PORGY & BESS, it is a Lullaby. Very interesting to read that Gershwin was inspired by an old UKRAINIAN SONG, wow! Here we go :-) It is very interesting to read more about this beautiful old song that became very popular among jazz musicians and got many, many arrangements already.
