The priest and prophet Samuel is the final judge of Israel and does a pretty good job – unfortunately, he has corrupt sons. Therefore, the people of Israel now want a king, too. God is persuaded and appoints Saul. Saul immediately has to prove himself in a rather long war with the Philistines and makes a few religious faux pas, which is why his hereditary title of king is immediately revoked from above. Instead, the young shepherd/singer-songwriter David is anointed as the new king, and he can do absolutely anything: He plays the harp brilliantly, defeats the "giant" Goliath, and the people love him. No wonder Saul goes crazy and keeps trying to kill him. With God's help, however, David escapes all attacks – and in the end, Saul is defeated and kills himself.
