Our guide is Fumihiko Sano, an architect who became an architect after working as a craftsman of Kyoto's sukiya-style architecture. This building, which aims to be a "seamless space where you can simultaneously feel the outside, the inside, and even the outside beyond," has countless highlights, including a dynamic earthen-floored dining area entirely covered in cypress, a courtyard where you can camp, and a lounge made from a single plank of Kirishima cedar. Sano's philosophy of creating spaces with unconventional and free-thinking ideas, while drawing on traditional craftsmanship, is a must-see. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked at design offices and other places before becoming independent in 2011 and establishing "Fumihiko Sano Studio." Based on practical experience and technical skills (construction methods, materials, and dimensions), they create works that re-examine the nature of contemporary Japanese culture. In 2016, as a Cultural Affairs Agency Exchange Ambassador, they traveled to 16 countries, implementing projects in various locations.
